The botanical name of Costus root is Saussurea costus, it is generally known as costus. The plant of Costus root is a perennial plant belonging to the Saussurea of India. The Costus root belongs to the family Asteraceae. This plant of Costus root is mainly cultivated in the regions within Himachal Pradesh and the Jammu-Kashmir range. The plant grows to a height of 1–2 m and has long left with purple-colored flowers.

The costus root oil is extracted through the steam distillation method from the dried roots of the Costus plant. The extracted oil is tender, woody, musty, and has a tenacious aroma. The color of the costus root oil is a thick light yellow to brown colored liquid.
